How Do Students Access the Cyber Range in Canvas?¶

Finding the Cyber Range in Canvas¶

When an instructor has their Cyber Range course connected to Canvas, students can find the Cyber Range app in the course navigation list on the left of the screen.

After selecting the Cyber Range app, students should immediately see the course. Students will not need to log in to the Cyber Range as it's integrated with their Canvas course. The first time students select the Cyber Range app, they will be asked to accept the Cyber Range's Acceptable Use and Data Collection Policies. Upon accepting, and for all subsequent visits to the app, students will see the course's name, description, and any exercise environments deployed to the course.

Note

Seeing a login screen instead could indicate an issue on the student's side, like an unsynchronized system clock. If experiencing something like this, please refer to the article Can't Login to Cyber Range Exercise Area Account for more information and potential fixes.

The Cyber Range app can be found in the list of Canvas course navigation buttons.

Accessing an Exercise Environment in Canvas¶

Under the course description, students can select the tile containing the exercise environment they wish to access. This will show the exercise environment's description, as well as the controls for the environment.

Selecting Start My Environment will turn on the virtual machine, allowing students to select the Join My Environment button after several seconds. This will open the virtual machine in a new tab for students to work in.

The "Start My Environment" button is the first button in the list of controls for the exercise environment.
