Getting an Instructor Account and Creating Your First Course

If you do not have an Instructor account in the range (the exercise area), this KB article will step you through the process of requesting an account, logging in, and creating your first course. It is important to note that instructors can only receive an invitation from an organization or course admin, not another instructor.

Getting a Cyber Range Account

  1. Request an Account

    Before you can log into the range, you will need to first visit the Virginia Cyber Range Signup Page. You should then fill out the account request form using your official school email address. For a detailed tutorial on requesting an account with the Virginia Cyber Range, please see the article titled Instructor Account Request and then continue on to step 2.

  2. Follow Email Invitation to Log in to your Course:

    Once your account request is vetted and approved, you will receive a unique login URL that you will need to click on and log in to the range with:

To decrease token conflicts, it may be better to open the invite link as an anonymous incognito or private browsing tab session until you get successfully logged in.

  1. Sign Into the Range:

    After opening your invitation link, log in with your preferred third party authentication provider (e.g. Google, Facebook, Azure AD).

    The authentication providers are positioned in the order: Google, Facebook, Azure AD.

    Upon selecting your third party authentication provider, you may be directed to their site for login. Once successfully logged in, you will be re-directed back to the Virginia Cyber Range.

Creating a Course

  1. Click on Create a New Course Button

    Once you get logged into the range for the first time, you will get an empty course listing:

    Once in, you will want to click on the "Create a new course" icon "+" to request a new course.

  2. Complete Course Request

    Once you click on the "Create a new course" icon "+", fill out the proposed course name, description and any advanced email communication template details you want used for when your students are invited. The course name and description are what your students will see once you've enrolled them.

    The advance email template allows you to change the subject and body of your invites. They allow for the use of variables such as [[]] and [[]]

    NOTE: Fall course requests begin on August 1st, Spring course requests begin on January 1st, and Summer course requests begin on June 1st.

  3. Wait for Pending Course Request to be Approved

    After you create your course request within the Cyber Range, you will see your course placeholder and its current state. Once it is approved by a course admin, it will change from "Pending" status to a live course (second window):

    A live course card displays the course name, instructor, number of users, and number of exercises.

    NOTE: Course approval often happens the same day you put in the request, but could also take several days depending on approval request loads.

  4. Approved Course is Now Ready to Add Exercises or Invite Students

    Now when you click on your approved course you'll see your course details, ready to either add exercises, environments or invite students.

    Your approved course will show your course title, role, course description, and status. Three buttons are present to allow you to edit course details, add exercises, and manage users.
